Virgin Australia hard landing probe highlights an issue facing all airlines

A Virgin Australia 737-800 has been out of service in Brisbane for more than a week after it was discovered to have struck a runway in Samoa with its right engine pod during a night time landing in stormy conditions on April 23.


The ATSB has launched an investigation into the incident, which it rates as "˜serious' meaning a crash could have occurred.


The jet also flew passenger carrying services over three days between April 24-26, including another flight between Auckland and Apia, Auckland and Brisbane and a return service between Brisbane and Port Moresby.
