Widodo in 'host mode' affirms Jakarta's ASEAN commitment

Indonesian President Joko Widodo was in a jovial mood on April 26 as he greeted a group of senior editors from Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries at his presidential palace and ushered them in to lunch.


The buffet "working lunch," for which Widodo stood in line with his guests, was the first he has shared with regional journalists since he came to power in October 2014. It was also unexpected, since he was scheduled to leave for a visit that day to the Indonesian province of Papua. Aides decided he should delay the trip to meet the media. The president was keen because it was a rare occasion to update a dozen or so regional editors on Indonesian affairs -- and to highlight his commitment to engaging with ASEAN.
