Getting stranded at the airport is no fun, but those stranded in Asian airports are luckier than those in Europe as time, it seems, has a way of flying faster on this side of the planet. That's because for those carrying smartphones and laptops its easier to kill time at Asian airports as many of them provide free, unlimited wi-fi.

"Nearly 70% of key Asian airports offer free, unlimited wi-fi to passengers, including those in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Tokyo, Singapore, and Hong Kong. It is a service Asian travellers can take nearly for granted"”all main airports in Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong offer it," found a study by Skyscanner, an online travel portal.

While the Kolkata airport provides free wi-fi for 30 minute sessions, Delhi's IGI Airport, the the busiest in the country, offers the same for 45 minutes and charges Rs 99 for the following hour. The Hyderabad airport offers 30 minutes free internet access.

"But those travelling further afield to Europe, only 48% of the airports in the study offer unlimited wi-fi access, the best being Russia and Italy, where all major airports offer the service," said the Skyscanner's Airport Wi-Fi guide.

While Berlin Tegel and Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen airports do not offer this service, at Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, travellers are given 45 minutes free connection before charging £3 per hour. Percentage apart, in sheer numbers, Europe has more wi-fi enabled airports. The study considered 50 European airports and 31 from 13 Asia Pacific countries. So, 48% and 70% respectively would mean 24 European airports and 22 Asian airports provide free, unlimited wi-fi.
