Shanghai airport deal could mean more flights for Brisbane

Direct flights between Brisbane and China's economic hub could soon be on the agenda after the city's main airport signed a memorandum of understanding with the Shanghai Airport Authority.


Brisbane Airport Corporation chief executive Julieanne Alroe signed the MOU with the SAA in Shanghai on Friday.


BAC airline and retail general manager Andrew Brodie said he hoped the MOU would be the first step in a process that would lead to currently unavailable direct connections between Brisbane and Shanghai, with its population of almost 22 million people.


Mr Brodie said BAC hoped to attract China Eastern Airlines, which used Shanghai's Pudong International Airport as its main hub.


China Eastern has direct flights to both Sydney and Melbourne from Shanghai, along with seasonal flights to Cairns.


"We've got a huge business end of the market currently going indirectly at the moment, via Sydney or Melbourne, up to Shanghai," Mr Brodie said.
