Foreign tourists as well as Japanese travelers headed for international destinations will be able to start their duty-free shopping in central Tokyo from next year.

The same tax exemptions as at duty-free shops in airports will apply to all purchases.

The Tokyo metropolitan area's first airport-style duty-free store will open in the Ginza Mitsukoshi department store in autumn 2015.

Japanese who plan to fly outbound from Japan will be able to purchase duty-free items by presenting their passport and flight ticket.

A joint venture company to be set up as early as September by four companies will operate the store. They include Japan Airport Terminal Co., which manages and operates passenger terminal buildings at Haneda Airport, and Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd.

The shop will aim to attract foreign visitors as well as Japanese customers who are headed overseas.

Goods for sale will be exempt from consumption tax as well as alcohol and tobacco taxes. Customers will collect their purchased items at either Haneda or Narita airports.

Japan's only other airport-style tax-free store is located in Naha.
