Airlines escaping to Indonesia's resort islands

JAKARTA -- Players in Southeast Asia's largest aviation market are bowing to traveler demand, moving away from the capital and setting up operational hubs on resort islands.


AirAsia, a Malaysian low-cost carrier, plans to expand its international flight services based on the island of Bali, while Indonesia's state-run flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is planning an airport and aircraft servicing facilities on Bintan Island near Singapore in cooperation with the Salim Group, the biggest conglomerate in Indonesia.


Garuda and AirAsia expect to attract more tourists as well as take advantage of growing demand resulting from economic development projects underway near the airports.
