About Mandala

PT. Mandala Airlines was founded on 17 April 1969 although their first flight was already in 1967. During the years Mandala Air connected 20 major cities in Indonesia with a diversified fleet of 12 aircraft of Boeing 737-200 and two Boeing 737-400 aircraft.
In mid-2006 Mandala Airline was bought by Cardig Internationals in a partnership with Indigo Partners. The new owners were aiming at rejuvenating its fleet and change it to an all Airbus fleet.
In 2007, Mandala ordered 30 Airbus A320 aircraft and discontinued the use of the B737-200 aircraft type. The new Airbusses would be maintained by Singapore Airlines Engineering Company. Unfortunately Mandala was declared bankrupt in 2011 and they stopped all their flights on January 13, 2011. This was a surprise for everybody, especialy considering they had been operating for 42 years.
A deal was being worked out that would allow Mandala to restructure it debt and be bought by Tiger Airways and an Indonesian partner. It took a long time for this deal to materialize but in April 2012, Tiger Airways announced to buy 33% stake from PT. Mandala. Since then Mandala began flying again on a single route Jakarta (CGK) - Medan (MES). Soon another route was added, an international flights on 20 April from Singapore (SIN) - Medan (MES) and Jakarta (CGK) - Kuala Lumpur on 4 May
Mandala and Tiger Airways have a common mission based on the low-cost model, namely eliminating as much possible costs while meanwhile promote safety, comfort and reliabilty with low fares. Mandala won the title of The Most Potential Brand in Airlines Service from INDONESIA BEST BRAND AWARD (2002) and On November 3, 2010, Indonesia Travel and Tourism awarded Mandala the Best Low-cost carrier in Indonesia Award. The main priority of Mandala Airlines is to be an airline with international safety standards as can be seen from the fact that Mandala has the IQSA Safety certification, besides only Garuda Indonesia.
Mandala is planning to offer routes to twenty destinations, using a fleet of aircraft Airbus A320 and A319. Currently, Mandala operates Airbus A320 with 180 seats capacity and A319 aircraft with a capacity of 144 seats.
